AVIF is a newer image format that often gives smaller files than JPG or WebP at similar visual quality, especially for photos. The trade-offs are encoding time and support.
Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display AVIF. Older software, some email clients, social upload forms and many image editors do not. If the file has to open everywhere, use JPG.
AVIF is slow to encode. A large photo can take several seconds, and a big batch takes a while. The tool encodes in the background so the page stays usable. Smaller dimensions encode much faster.
AVIF holds up at lower numbers than JPG. Try 50 to 65 and compare against the original in the preview.
