How to combine several bank statements into one Excel sheet

Year-end, a loan application or a client file all need the same thing: twelve monthly statements, maybe from three accounts, in one sheet. Copy and paste works until it quietly goes wrong. These are the places it goes wrong, and how to check each.

1. Start from CSV, not PDF

CSV exports from your bank have real columns. If the bank only gives PDFs, convert them to CSV first (the Statement Converter does this in your browser) and check the preview against the statement before you merge.

2. Overlapping statements count rows twice

Downloads often overlap: a "last 90 days" file and a monthly file share a month. If you paste both, those rows are in twice. Remove a row only when the date, amount and description match and the two files belong to the same account. Two identical coffees on one day inside one file are real and must stay. The same row in two different accounts is not a duplicate either.

3. Check the date order

03/04/2026 can mean 3 April in day-first files or 4 March in month-first files. A file with days above 12 settles it. A file without them does not. Set the order per file, and look at the first and last date of each file after merging.

4. Credit card files often have the opposite sign

Many card exports list charges as positive numbers. A bank export often lists spending as negative. Merge them without flipping the card sign and your charges look like income. Decide the direction per file.

5. One currency per merge

Adding euros and dollars as plain numbers gives a total that means nothing. Merge one currency at a time, or convert before you merge.

6. Use the running balance as a check

When a file has enough usable running-balance data, a row can be checked against the previous balance plus the amount. A row that breaks the chain usually means a missing line, a wrong sign or a wrong date.

Do it in your browser

Statement Merger does these steps for you: it merges many CSV files, lets you set an account name, date order and bank or card direction per file, removes repeats only inside the same account, lists what it removed, runs a balance check when enough usable running-balance data is present, and exports one Excel workbook. The files are read in your browser and are not uploaded. The free page exports the first 40 rows.
