How to split a large CSV file into smaller files

When to split

Many importers limit the file size or the rows per upload. Spreadsheet applications also have row and memory limits. A big export may also need to be sent to several people, one part each.

By number of rows

Choose a size such as 5,000 rows per file. Every part repeats the header row, so each file can be imported on its own. The parts come in one ZIP.

By value in a column

Pick a column such as Region. You get one file per distinct value, named after it. Up to 500 groups are allowed, so an ID column is the wrong choice.

Check the result

The last part is usually shorter. Open the first and last file to confirm the header and the count of rows.

Private by design

The file is read and split in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
