How to make an invoice when prices already include VAT or sales tax

Tax-inclusive prices

Many shops and freelancers quote a price that already contains VAT, GST or sales tax. On the invoice you then need to show how much of the total is tax. Tick "Prices already include tax" in the Invoice and Quote Generator.

How it is worked out

For a 20% rate, a price of 120.00 contains 100.00 net and 20.00 tax. The tool divides the price by 1 plus the rate to get the net amount and shows the rest as tax. The total stays at the price you entered.

Mixed rates

Give a line its own tax percent when it differs from the default, for example 0% for an exempt item. The PDF lists each rate with its tax amount.

Discounts

A discount is shared across the lines in proportion, so each tax group is reduced fairly. Rounding is done per tax rate.

The tool does not check tax law, e-invoicing rules or required invoice wording for any country. Check what applies to you.
