How to check automatic captions before you publish them

Why review

Speech recognition is good on clear speech and weak on names, numbers, jargon, accents, music and people talking over each other. A wrong word in a caption is easy to miss unless you read for it.

A five minute routine

  1. Play the video with captions on at normal speed and stop at every mistake.
  2. Search for names and product terms and use Replace all to fix repeats.
  3. Look at captions marked as too fast and split or lengthen them.
  4. Check the first and last caption times against the video.
  5. Read numbers, dates and prices aloud against the audio.

Fix timing

If every caption is a little early or late, shift all times by the same amount (for example 0.4 seconds) instead of editing each one.

Tool

The Caption Maker has all of this next to the video: click a caption to jump to it, edit text and times, find and replace, split, join and shift.
