How it works
Use a sharp, front-facing photo in good light. Step back from the camera so the whole head and shoulders show.
Click the top of the head and the chin. The crop and the size are worked out from those two points.
Save the single photo, or the print sheet to take to any photo printer at 4x6.

Questions
Will my photo be accepted?
We cannot promise that. This tool checks the size and the head height you mark against the published rules we list, with the source for each. It cannot check expression, glasses, lighting, shadows or whether the background is plain. Read the official page for your country before you apply. Some countries want a photo from a studio.
Is it a problem to change the background?
For some countries, yes. The US State Department asks for the original, unedited photo. Canada lists changing the background as a reason for rejection. Chinese consulates say photos must not be modified. That is why Keep my own background is the default here. Use a plain wall and good light instead, and only replace the background where the official rules allow it.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The photo is read, cropped and saved on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere. Background replacement uses a small model that runs in your browser.
What size are the files?
Files are made at 300 dots per inch, so a 2 x 2 inch photo is 600 x 600 pixels. The check list warns you when your own photo has too few pixels for that size. You can also set a largest file size in KB.
Which countries are included?
United States, United Kingdom, Canada, a 35 x 45 mm reference based on German dimensions (not Germany's certified digital submission route), Japan, China and Australia. Each shows its source page. Rules change, so confirm on the official page. For any other country, the offline pack has a custom size.
What does it not do?
It does not find your face by itself, so you mark two points. It does not check that a photo meets biometric rules, remove glasses glare, fix red eyes or retouch. It makes no changes to your face.
