How to compress a video without uploading it

Most online video compressors send your file to a server, wait for it to finish, then give you a link to download. That takes time on a big file, and the video sits on someone else's computer in between.

Compressing in the browser instead

Modern browsers can decode and encode video themselves. The Xargaar Video Compressor uses that: your video is read from your disk, re-encoded as H.264 in the page and saved as an MP4. There is no upload step, so there is no upload wait and no copy elsewhere.

How to do it

  1. Open the Video Compressor and choose your MP4 or MOV.
  2. Pick a quality level, or type the size you need in MB.
  3. Press Compress, check the preview and download.

What to expect

  • Speed depends on your computer, because your computer does the work.
  • It works best in current Chrome or Edge on a computer.
  • Input is MP4, M4V, MOV, WebM or MKV. Output is MP4.
  • The free version handles up to 5 minutes of video (files up to 500 MB) per run. The planned offline pack removes those limits. It is not yet for sale.
